Reinstalled Permanent Collection Galleries: The Artist as Curator: Kiki Smith and Perceiving Space in Art

@ Davis Museum & Cultural Center, Wellesley College

Opening: February 11, 2009

The thematic reinstallation of the Davis Museum’s permanent collection continues with the opening of two new galleries.

For the first iteration of a theme called The Artist-as-Curator, internationally recognized artist Kiki Smith selected dozens of vessels from across eras and cultures, as well as a spectacular Mexican ex-voto painting, to create an installation she entitled Cut from her breast.

The second new theme, Perceiving Space in Art, focuses on how artists construct meaning through their organization of space, pictorially or physically, and how these decisions affect our experience as viewers. A range of media, including painting, sculpture, video, performance art, and music, is presented.

The reinstallation of these galleries has been funded by The J. Paul Getty Trust, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Wellesley College Friends of Art, Davis Museum Program Endowment, and a gift from Jeannette Donovan in memory of her daughter Jean Donovan ‘76.
