Gus Van Sant Lecture @ RISD, 4/28 7pm

Director of Good Will Hunting and Milk, RISD Alum, lecture @ RISD, April 28th, 7pm at RISD Auditorium
Known for his many audacious, often offbeat movies, independent film director Gus Van Sant has built a strong career through a magical combination of ingenious writing, perceptive casting and detail-obsessed directing. In 2009 both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and the Directors Guild of America nominated him for best director for his most recent film Milk, the biopic that won Sean Penn an Oscar for his portrayal of San Francisco’s first openly gay politician, Harvey Milk. Other films/awards include: Drugstore Cowboy, Van Sant’s second success, a funny and sympathetic look at dope addiction and burglary, for which Van Sant won the National Society of Film Critics’ awards for best screenplay, director and film, My Own Private Idaho (1991) starring Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix as two young hustlers with a mostly male clientele, followed by the hugely successful To Die For (1995), a black comedy about a would-be newscaster who arranges her husband’s murder. Good Will Hunting (1997), Finding Forrester (2000) and Milk (2008) have been Van Sant’s biggest commercial successes to date, allowing him to emerge as one of the most influential directors of the past decade. In 2003 his made-for-HBO film Elephant, won both the Palme d’Or and the Best Director prizes at the Cannes Film Festival.
This event is free.
